The Problem Solving Problem

Wednesday Apr 19, 2023

Wednesday Apr 19, 2023

Employers often say that they want "good problem solvers" or people with "problem-solving skills" but when we ask them what they mean by that the answers vary wildly. And when we ask employees how they feel they are at problem-solving, they always say that they are good at it. When we ask them if they are given opportunities to problem solve they say, "rarely"! This is a problem-solving problem. Employers want it and employees have it, but the chances to use it are few and far between. In this episode, we discuss some ideas about how employees can take the reigns more and how managers can get out of the way to access those in-demand problem-solving skills!

Making Training Stick

Wednesday Apr 12, 2023

Wednesday Apr 12, 2023

We have all had to learn new things in our job. It might be a new software or new program, but sometimes new things stick easier and sometimes we forget them instantly and have to ask a ton of questions again. When we are the ones teaching new information, we always think that we are clear and understandable, and it is frustrating when - inevitably - someone comes back and says, "I don't understand" or "I didn't do it that way". So what makes us learn at work? What are the things that stick and the things that don't? Why do we instantly pick up on some things, but not all things? In this episode, we discuss the best ways to make training impactful and tips for how you can be a better student AND a better teacher at work!

Music has a way of speaking to us all: sometimes we hear our love stories, sometimes we hear our past selves, and sometimes, as consultants, we hear good business advice! So, just for fun, we pulled together some of our favorite lyrics that we thought were also good leadership lessons. So, get some songs stuck in your head and enjoy some leadership and laughter on this episode of the People Centric Podcast.

The Authenticity Trap

Wednesday Mar 29, 2023

Wednesday Mar 29, 2023

Authenticity can help people build relationships, express new ideas, and even help deal with conflict. But sometimes, it is a bad idea to be totally and authentically you. We know that this sounds a little anti-people centric, but sometimes, being totally authentic can undermine your credibility or damage your reputation. In this episode, we discuss the times when you should be you and when your whole self should take a back seat.

Wednesday Mar 22, 2023

Wednesday Mar 22, 2023

We did an episode early in our podcast history called Setting Boundaries at Work. It is our most downloaded episode. But we did this episode over 2 years ago - and the world, the workforce, and many workplace dynamics have changed a lot since then. So we decided to revisit this episode and give you an updated version of Boundaries at Work. If you want to hear our previous Boundaries at Work Episode (which still has some great information in it), you can listen to it here:

The Skills Gap

Wednesday Mar 15, 2023

Wednesday Mar 15, 2023

Have you ever heard of this so-called "Skills Gap"? It often coincides with a survey done with leaders, where leaders state the skills that they feel the workforce is missing. The studies then go on to list the top technical and top soft skills that are missing from teams. We hear about these things and have to address the elephant in the room: the skills that are "missing" from teams are generally not missing, but those skills are being squashed by bad management. We discuss the skills gap and more in this episode.

Languishing: failure to succeed or lack of vitality.
We are seeing it. We are feeling it. It could be that the holidays are over and it has been a bit dreary, maybe it is because we were already burnt out from the years past and the new year offers little respite, perhaps we all need a hug and some encouragement - but in any case, there are people all around us that are languishing at work. Languishing is that feeling of an inability to move things forward, when we wake up in the morning and say, "I am doing it, but I am just not feeling it". If you or someone you know is languishing - listen to this episode to hear more about what you can do to find your sparkle again!
